What Is Final Expense Life Insurance?

Committed to Excellence in Insurance

Final expense life insurance — sometimes called burial insurance or funeral insurance — is a small, affordable policy designed to cover the costs that come with the end of life.
It’s meant to give your loved ones financial peace of mind, so they’re not burdened with funeral, burial, or other related expenses.

How Is It Different from Regular Life Insurance?

In some ways, it’s similar — both are designed to provide a benefit when you pass.
But the purpose and amount are different:

  • Final expense insurance – Smaller coverage ($2,000–$50,000) meant to cover funeral and related costs.
  • Life insurance – Larger coverage designed to replace income, pay off debts, and protect your family’s financial future.

Depending on your needs, you might choose one or both.

Key Features of Final Expense Life Insurance

1. Lower coverage, lower cost

Because these policies are for smaller amounts, premiums are generally more affordable than term or whole life.

2. Easy to qualify

Most final expense policies don’t require a medical exam. You’ll answer a few health questions and can often get coverage quickly.

3. Possible waiting period

Some “guaranteed issue” policies have a 1–3 year waiting period before the full benefit is paid. If death occurs during that time, premiums are typically refunded with interest. Always read the fine print.

Do You Need Both Final Expense and Life Insurance?

Not necessarily. If you already have a life insurance policy, it can be used to cover final expenses.
However, that reduces what’s left for your beneficiaries. If you want your life insurance payout to go entirely to your family, adding a final expense policy may make sense.

What Does It Cost?

Premiums depend on:

  • Coverage amount – Most policies range from $2,000 to $50,000.

  • Age and health – Younger, healthier applicants pay less, but even older adults and those with health issues can often find affordable options.

Bottom line: Final expense insurance is a simple, affordable way to protect your loved ones from unexpected costs during a difficult time.

Question for you: Would your family have the funds ready to cover your final expenses, or would a small, guaranteed policy give them greater peace of mind?
